If you’ve ever been scolded by your mom for messing with the fine china cabinet, now’s the time to create new associations with these fanciful motifs. Porcelain, a white vitrified ceramic known for its sleek and opulent beauty, is the perfect decoration to your skin if you’re itching for a classy tattoo.

Originating from China, the first appearance of this captivating pottery is debated. Some of the earliest pieces of porcelain can be traced back to the Eastern Han Dynasty (25-220 CE). New techniques of making porcelain were introduced during the Tang Dynasty (618-907 CE), as the popularity of tea increased and prized ceramic wares circulated all along the northern Silk Road. By the sixteenth century, porcelain was being regularly exported to Europe—the striking and distinguished blue-and-white variations being the most sought after.

These days, porcelain is still widely adored as its antique appearance simply can’t be matched. Upon inspection, you’ll find wildly intricate designs from mesmerizing floral patterns to sprawling dragons and birds in flight. With a porcelain tattoo, you’re not only paying homage to a culturally revered art style, but also letting everyone know that you’re far too rare, delicate and dignified to be meddled with.

In all seriousness, porcelain tattoos are class (a term I’ve picked up from the only Irish person in this office), and the contrast of white, blue and gold in pigmented ink form is genuinely stunning. We’ll let the beauty of these pieces speak for themselves in the gallery below, so feel free to marvel at the astounding works and try not to break anything while you’re here.
